Iris was a shadow among the mixing bowls. Tucked deep in the corner of the bottom cabinet, she felt perfectly safe behind the stack of Tupperware. It was cool, dark, and—most importantly—completely stationary.

"Iris? I know you’re in there. I can see your whiskers twitching behind the blender."
Opal stood in the kitchen, her tail swaying with purpose. She leaned her head into the dark cabinet, her eyes glowing.

"Go away, Opal," Iris mumbled, tucking her nose under a paw. "The world is too big today. I’m staying right here where nothing moves and nobody asks me to exercise."
"But it’s Great Strides day!" Opal urged,

And the Adventure Continues

Iris blinked against the sudden glare of the kitchen, squeezing past the blender with a defeated flick of her ears. Just as her paws touched the cool linoleum, a violent gust of wind rattled the house. With a loud click, the front door gave way, and the door swung wide open to the vast world outside.

Before Opal could utter a warning meow, a stray leaf blew straight into the hallway. Iris, startled out of her wits, bolted right past the open door, driven by pure instinct to run. She scrambled through the yard, pushed through a gap in the wooden fence, and sprinted down the sidewalk.

When she finally stopped, the familiar smells were gone. She was completely lost in a labyrinth of strange driveways and towering hedges.

"Meow? Is anyone there?" a tiny, high-pitched squeak echoed from a nearby bush.
Iris crept forward, her own anxiety melting into curiosity. Hidden beneath a large hydrangea plant was a huddle of twelve scruffy, shivering stray kittens. They looked up at her with wide, hopeful eyes. Iris felt a sudden surge of protective warmth; she knew exactly what it felt like to want a safe corner when the world felt too big.

"We're lost," another kitten whimpered, nudging Iris’s grey fur.
"Don't worry," Iris purred softly, her fears entirely forgotten. "Follow me. I know where there's a crowd of friendly people, and they will help us."

Leading the parade of tiny paws, Iris marched proudly back toward the main street where the Great Strides walk was just beginning. She didn't hide in the back this time. With the kittens following her like a fuzzy train, Iris strode right into the center of the event, her head held high.

The walkers instantly stopped in their tracks. The event was packed with passionate, animal-loving Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) families who had a massive soft spot for rescues. Within minutes, the kittens were scooped up into warm arms, cheered for, and immediately adopted by loving CFF families who promised them wonderful lives.
With her mission accomplished and the kittens safely in their new homes, the overwhelming noise of the crowd started to catch up to Iris. She slipped through the legs of the cheering walkers and followed her own scent trail back down the sidewalk. She squeezed through the gap in the fence, bounded across the yard, and leaped right through the open front door.

Opal was waiting in the kitchen, her eyes wide with relief. Iris didn't stop to chat. She darted straight into the bottom cabinet, wedging herself perfectly safe and sound behind the stack of Tupperware.

Opal leaned her head into the dark space, purring softly. "You were amazing out there, Iris."
"Thank you," Iris mumbled, tucking her nose happily under her paw in the cool, dark, completely stationary dark. "But the world is definitely still too big. I’m staying right here for the rest of the day."
