My Great Strides Story

When Ali was born in 1988, the expected "median age of survival" with CF was 18. But here she is, 36, with 3 children of her own (the one "on the way" in the picture arrived in February 2024). She takes "Trikafta" - a drug that changes the behavior of the gene that makes CF so lethal. It is one of the greatest modern medical breakthroughs ever! Still, there is currently NO CURE for cystic fibrosis. Ali and others lucky enough to benefit from the new medicine still have to monitor organ function, navigate side effects, fit in multiple medications each day, and worry about damage already done by CF leading to hospitalizations. The new drug doesn't work for everyone, and too many people with CF spend a great deal of their lives with clogged lungs, missing school or work, or in the hospital. Many still die at heart-breakingly young ages. I’m walking to help change that reality.
CF is a genetic, life-shortening disease that devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. CF makes it difficult to breathe--so difficult, that people with CF often feel they are drowning in the open air. Life-threatening lung infections often lead to extensive lung damage and respiratory failure.
For now, Ali is doing great! But she and every person born with cystic fibrosis is on a unique journey and experiences this challenging disease differently. While progress has been made, a long road lies ahead for people fighting this terrible disease. We need a cure so that Ali and everyone with CF has a better chance to live a long, healthy life.
Will you help us end cystic fibrosis?
By donating to my fundraising goal, you have the power to advance the research and science needed to drive our shared dream forward – a cure for everyone with CF. It's possible--there are gene therapy and other studies underway that hold a promise of an outright cure. Our hope is the cure will happen in time for people with CF who are racing the clock against this progressive disease.
