My Great Strides Story
Fundraising for Central Illinois Great Strides 2026
Andrea Killian
Our fundraising journey for Cystic Fibrosis or CF began in 2004 when a group of my oldest friends got together a few months after Alex's diagnosis and created a fundraising team called Alex's Angels.
On December 4, 2003 when Alex received his diagnosis, the average median survival age for CF was 37.5 years. Just 20 years prior, when Steve & I were in Kindergarten, CF was considered a children's disease because most who had it were lucky to live to age 20.
In March of this year, Steve & I had the privilege to travel to Washington D.C. to talk to our lawmakers about the needs of the CF Community and how affordable healthcare is crucial to our family and to all people living with chronic illness.
We also learned from scientists at the CF Foundation who are developing the newest treatments and research trials. My favorite slide was the one that shows "Conditional Survival" – a CF patient's median survival age based on their age now.
Alex's conditional survival age is roughly 67 years, which is slightly higher than the overall average median survival age of 65.
This is amazing. But we're not done. 5% of patients with CF are unable to benefit from the modulator medications that have made this jump in survival age possible. Alex takes one called Alyftrek, but 3-year old Louis cannot. We advocated alongside his mom in D.C.
Until CF = Cure Found.
This is the mission.
Will you partner with us?
Every person born with cystic fibrosis is on a unique journey and experiences this challenging disease differently. While progress has been made, a long road lies ahead for far too many people fighting this terrible disease. We need a cure so that everyone with CF has a better chance to live a long, healthy life.*
