My Xtreme Hike Story

Fundraising for North Carolina Fall Xtreme Hike 2026
Ashlesha Chaubal
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic disease that devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. CF makes it difficult to breathe and fight life-threatening infections, often leading to extensive lung damage and respiratory failure. More than 40,000 Americans and 105,000 people worldwide are affected by CF. I am committed to making a difference in the lives of people with CF and their families, through my work as a researcher at the UNC Marsico Lung Institute - CF Center and through fundraising for the CF Foundation.
60 years ago, children with CF usually did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, because of Foundation-supported research and care, the median survival age of people with CF is over 50. Working alongside the CF community, the CF Foundation has fostered the development of more than a dozen CF treatments and helped add decades of life for people with CF. Yet, many people with CF do not benefit from existing therapies. We need a cure so that everyone with CF has a better chance to live a long, healthy life. While progress has been made, a long road lies ahead for far too many people fighting this terrible disease.
Every person born with CF is on a unique journey and experiences this challenging disease differently. To honor the resilient CF community, I am challenging myself to complete a 30.1 mile hike in a day and to raise $3000 for CF research.
Please help me reach my fundraising goal and motivate me to complete a hike I have never attempted before!
By donating to my fundraising goal, you have the power to advance the research and science needed to drive our shared dream forward – a cure for everyone with CF.
