Living Past Your Expiration Date
When Justin was born on Christmas Eve 1997, the life expectancy for someone with Cystic Fibrosis was 27 years. This past Christmas, Justin officially outlived his life expectancy when he turned 28. A major milestone to celebrate, for sure, but he’s not done yet.
Just before Justin turned 18, a new type of treatment was approved. This class of medications, CFTR modulators, work by correcting the malfunctioning CFTR protein in people with CF. These drugs have been a game-changer for those who can use them; the work well to stop further lung damage, and for very young children, they can keep the pancreas working properly, so the digestive enzymes that 90% of CF patients need to be able to eat aren’t necessary. This makes life much easier for these families. However, not everyone can use modulators – it depends on the type of genetic defect you have. I’ll spare you the genetics lesson, but there are many combinations. CFTR modulators also cause side effects. The most common is liver damage, which Justin is now starting to encounter. It’s also important to know this treatment is NOT a cure, so funds for research are still needed.
Out with the old - Justin and Bluey
Justin continues to do well. He’s in his fifth year working at Lamar Advertising, and is now a Charting Manager. He sold his beautiful blue 2018 Camaro RS 1LT the day after Christmas and just bought a beautiful blue 2017 Camaro SS 1LE. Is it better, stronger, faster? We’ll see when he takes it to Road America, but I’m betting yes.
In with the new - Justin and Meredith
He still lives about 2 miles from us, which means we get to see him once or twice a week for dinner and fun family bonding. In December, the four of us finally got to take the Caribbean cruise we had to postpone two years ago. We ate ridiculous amounts of food, Justin tried to set a record for crème brulee consumption, and we laughed ourselves silly every day, which is no surprise. We’re already planning our next family cruise.
If you’d like to hear Justin’s story in his own words as last year’s speaker, click the video pinned to the top of Elaine’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/azwildcat/
We invite you to join us in our quest to make CF stand for Cure Found with your tax-deductible donation to support Justin in this year’s Great Strides fundraising walk by visiting https://fundraise.cff.org/GBWI2026/Justin.
On behalf of Justin and everyone else fighting CF, thank you for your support. You are helping improve their lives, and adding tomorrows every day.
With gratitude,
Troy, Elaine, Justin & Ryan
