My Great Strides Story

“She doesn’t look sick.” That’s often the comments we hear when talking about Avery’s cystic fibrosis. And it’s true! She doesn’t look sick and doesn’t act sick. She runs around with her friends, plays three sports, and skis all winter long. But the only reason she’s doing these things is because she is vigilant with her medications and daily therapy treatments. And those are only possible because of the incredible work the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has done over the years with donations given to fundraisers like Great Strides. Not every CF patient is as lucky as Avery has been so far. In fact, I’ve been closely following the day-to-day updates from a woman in her early 30s who has just had her second double lung transplant. She was perfectly healthy in September and her health took a very quick decline. In the matter of weeks it was clear she needed lungs. She was lucky enough to receive lungs before it was too late but she has a very long road ahead of her. While I feel so lucky that Avery is healthy right now, we don't know what the future holds and there are still too many cases like this other young woman. That’s why fundraisers like these are so important.
