My Great Strides Story

Fundraising for Morris-Essex Great Strides 2026
Carolyn Darmiento
My sister and I were born with CF at a time when limited treatments were available. Unfortunately, my sister passed away at 13 years old back in the early 80s.
Twenty years later, I was fortunate enough to undergo a double lung transplant (for which I am extremely grateful), but it is not a cure. Anti rejection medications are tough on the body and cause other problems requiring treatment. And it doesn't resolve the other medical issues caused by CF - like GI issues, diabetes, chronic sinusitis, and in some people, liver disease
In my case, the anti rejection meds destroyed my kidneys. My devoted husband kindly gave me a third chance at life by donating one of his.
Help us raise money to fund better treatments, if not a cure for CF - so that those affected can live full lives without the need for a transplant. Thank you for your support!
See below for more information about CF.
CF is a genetic, life-shortening disease that devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. CF makes it difficult to breathe and fight life-threatening infections, often leading to extensive lung damage and respiratory failure.
Every person born with cystic fibrosis is on a unique journey and experiences this challenging disease differently. While progress has been made, a long road lies ahead for far too many people fighting this terrible disease. We need a cure so that everyone with CF has a better chance to live a long, healthy life.
Will you help us end cystic fibrosis?
By donating to my fundraising goal, you have the power to advance the research and science needed to drive our shared dream forward - a cure for everyone with CF.
