My Great Strides Story
Fundraising for Morris-Essex Great Strides 2026

Imagine being born with a disease that was considered deadly by 30, to being told you may see gene therapy in your lifetime. You never believe it, but you hope. And imagine that actually happens...there is a breakthrough in science that changes everything, and leads to the development of a life changing medication… and everyone else can receive it but you.
That's what it's like to have a nonsense mutation with cystic fibrosis for so many born during this precarious time. It is a rollercoaster of emotions that after awhile becomes exhausting and speculative. Lots of headlines (the clickbait of today) but nothing tangible. Gene therapy was this highly politicised idea, even up until 2010, you couldn't mention the idea. It was easy to dismiss. Despite this negativity, patients, their friends, family, and scientists will continue to look into the future of gene therapy with the same bright eyes. We will continue to believe in "cracking the code."
So for today and forever, we hope, even when it's hard, because the unbelievable has already happened in our lifetime, not just for cf, but for so many other patients who will benefit from these breakthroughs.
