Our son, Joe, was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a potentially life-threatening genetic disease that impacts the lungs and digestive system. While this diagnosis has undeniably shaped parts of his life, it has never defined who he is. From the very beginning, our family made the decision to face this disease head-on. Joe has embraced that same mindset, refusing to let Cystic Fibrosis limit his dreams, ambitions, or outlook on life.

     Although Cystic Fibrosis is incurable, Joe has always viewed his diagnosis not as an obstacle, but as an opportunity to demonstrate resilience, determination, and purpose. Throughout his life, he has committed himself to a rigorous daily routine of therapies, medications, and medical treatments to maintain his health. He has also participated in clinical studies that help advance new treatments, not only for himself but for others living with this disease.

     While many college students can roll out of bed and head to class, Joe's mornings begin much earlier. Every day of his life he must take inhaled and oral medications and complete a 25-minute physical therapy treatment designed to help maintain his lung function. Joe also needs to take digestive enzyme with every meal. Despite these daily challenges, Joe has never complained or allowed his condition to serve as an excuse. Instead, he approaches every day with determination, discipline, and gratitude.

     There is no denying the impact that Cystic Fibrosis has on Joe's daily life, however, he has always chosen to create his own path. He has never allowed his diagnosis to stand in the way of either his academic goals or personal pursuits. Throughout his life, Joe has participated in a variety of sports, including skiing, swimming, dek hockey, cross-country, other physically demanding activities and he is an avid fisherman. 
     Today, as a student at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), Joe continues to challenge himself and inspire others. After arriving at TCNJ, he joined the Ultimate Frisbee team and quickly became a respected leader among his peers. Through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to his teammates, Joe earned the role of team captain. His success both on and off the field is yet another example that Cystic Fibrosis does not define him and never will.

     Recently, Joe experienced the loss of his grandfather, Tom, who was one of his greatest supporters and role models. Tom firmly believed in perseverance, hard work, and never giving up when faced with adversity. If he were here today, he would undoubtedly remind Joe that challenges are meant to be overcome, not surrendered to. Joe carries those lessons with him every day, honoring his grandfather's memory through his determination to keep pushing forward no matter what obstacles come his way.

     As parents, we could not be prouder of the young man Joe has become. Cystic Fibrosis has given him a perspective on life that many people do not gain until much later in adulthood. Rather than seeing himself as a victim of circumstances, Joe has chosen to be a victor. He faces each challenge with courage, appreciates every opportunity, and inspires everyone around him through his resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to living life to the fullest.

     Joe's journey is not defined by Cystic Fibrosis. It is defined by his character, perseverance, compassion, and determination. We have no doubt that he will continue to achieve great things while serving as an inspiration to countless others facing challenges of their own.
