My Great Strides Story

I never believed I would get to this point in my fundraising. In 2014, I lost my beloved 21 year old son, Jeremy, to Cystic Fibrosis. My 36 year old daughter Enid always seemed a bit stronger, more able to fight off the constant infections which settled in her lungs, and made everyday activities more difficult. Like many other adults with CF, Enid was diagnosed with CF related diabetes as well in 2014. Both of my kids belonged to the 10% of those with CF who had what was called a nonsense mutation ( there are hundreds of mutations) which does not yet have a modulator drug which greatly increases the ability to fight off infections and improves the quality of life.
This July, July 17th to be exact, Enid was no longer able to fight off the infections which plagued her, and she left to join her brother. She had remained active, working part time at a groomer she loved, and riding her horse, JB, as often as she was able. Both of my kids gladly volunteered for CF drug trials, and Enid was the the first patient to receive an experimental gene therapy at Columbia in 2024.
Cystic Fibrosis has now taken both of my children, and I am left with memories and the desire to find a cure, or at least a modulator for every mutation so that no mother ever has to lose both of her children to such a cruel disease.
You can help by making a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and/or walking at Great Strides at Wantagh Park on Saturday, September 26 at 3:00pm. Your donations will help scientists to find a modulator drug which can stabilize CF patients in the final 10% until a cure can be found. My kids spent their entire lives doing treatments, taking medications and enrolling in trials which we hoped would help find a cure. Please help me help the CF Foundation find a cure so no other children or adults will lose their lives, and no other mothers will cry themselves to sleep at night because of this horrible disease.
You can make a donation here which goes directly to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. My family and I have been participating in the Great Strides walk since 1994, less than a year after Jeremy was born. I hoped we would find a cure… and never expected to lose both of my beloved children. Thank you for reading this long story, and for donating to the CF Foundation to honor the memory of Enid, and Jeremy. Thank you!
