My Xtreme Hike Story 2026

There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis. Too many people with CF die young, like my daughter, Krista Lynn Baker, at age 20, awaiting a double-lung transplant.
I’m hiking to help change that reality. We hike for 8 year-old Finley Anderson who is responding well to the new medications and therapies being offered by the CF Foundation's efforts!
It is estimated that 90% of the more than 40,000 CF patients in the USA, are experiencing a higher-quality of life than ever before! But there is still more work to do! And that requires funding for CF medical research.
This will be the 7th year that my hiking team, The Salty Licks, has fundraised. Thank you for your past support! Any amount helps!
CF is a genetic, life-shortening disease that devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. CF makes it difficult to breathe and fight life-threatening infections, often leading to extensive lung damage and respiratory failure.
Every person born with cystic fibrosis is on a unique journey and experiences this challenging disease differently. While progress has been made, a long road lies ahead for far too many people fighting this terrible disease. We need a cure so that everyone with CF has a better chance to live a long, healthy life.
Will you help us end cystic fibrosis?
By donating to my fundraising goal, you have the power to advance the research and science needed to drive our shared dream forward – a cure for everyone with CF.
NOTE: I have 5 weeks to raise $2500. in contributions. My site is secure and will provide you with a receipt for income tax purposes.
Due to a back injury in June, I am being treated for a compression fracture on L3 vertebrae. After 35 days of using a walker at home and not driving due to prescription pain meds , I'm on the road to recovery. My kyphoplasty surgery was successful and I begin PT next week.
It is likely I will not be an active hiker on August 8, 2026 on Mt. Hood, the tallest mountain in Oregon, but I will serve as a volunteer on the trail head, water aid station, with my daughter Nicole Jonak. My youngest daughter, Amanda Nelson has a schedule conflict.
Thank you for your consideration in supporting CFF Xtreme Hike 2026! Any amount helps!
With deep gratitude, John Baker
