Last year, my family experienced the absolutely devastating, shocking loss of my beloved first cousin Andy Lipman. We were raised together in a little suburb in Georgia, and he was both a big brother to me and a hero. As a warrior for Cystic Fibrosis, he published award-winning books, gave incredible public speeches, and worked tirelessly to raise money for CF. To me, he was also the boy who wowed me with his handstands, scared me with his Freddy Krueger costumes, and let me pet his iguanas and hamsters while he played SEGA. He grew up to be the most inspirational, kindest, fittest, silliest man, and my go-to for all things Braves, running, and fitness. He loved his family and dogs (no more iguanas!) more than anything in the world, and he has left behind an enormous void and quite a legacy.
There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis and too many people with CF leave this world far too soon, including my first cousin Wendy, Andy's sister, as well. I’m running to help change that reality, and I am doing so in honor of Andy and my dad as he fights the late stages of Parkinson's – he is the one who trained us both from a young age to run this very same race.
CF is a genetic, life-shortening disease that devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. CF makes it difficult to breathe and fight life-threatening infections, often leading to extensive lung damage and respiratory failure.
Every person born with cystic fibrosis is on a unique journey and experiences this challenging disease differently. While progress has been made, a long road lies ahead for far too many people fighting this terrible disease. We need a cure so that everyone with CF has a better chance to live a long, healthy life.
