My Great Strides Story

Paul Edelman
When my sister’s son was born in 1989, she immediately knew he wasn’t thriving like her first child. He was soon diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and thankfully responded to the care of his doctors at the local CF clinic. Seven years later, my sister gave birth to a beautiful baby girl who also tested positive for CF. Both children are now thriving young adults thanks to their own willpower and the support of family, friends, and their medical community.
It requires significant effort to raise a child on a good day. When you add the tasks necessary to keep CF kids healthy, the effort becomes monumental. My father often referred to my sister as a saint for everything he saw her do on a daily basis.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation supports the parents as well as the patients. One interesting way is by providing outlets for the parents and families to rally around the cause of finding a cure.
In the early 1990s, my sister and her family walked in their first Great Strides. It wasn’t long before fundraising through Great Strides and other CFF events became a mission for her family.
As her enthusiasm grew, the extended family soon became involved, and we formed a national team. Family members have walked in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, California, Illinois and Texas. Participation in Great Strides is a source of pride for our family.
For my sister’s family, the Great Strides event became a community affair in her town, centered around their son and their daughter. Over the years, the teams grew in numbers and funds raised. And it was fun!
You can have an impact on the fight for a cure. You too may find the Great Strides event to be a rallying cry for your family to do something to fight back against this disease.
Please support your local Great Strides event this year. We will!
Will you help us end cystic fibrosis?
By donating to my fundraising goal, you have the power to advance the research and science needed to drive our shared dream forward – a cure for everyone with CF.
