Mya Behind the Mask
Fundraising for St. Peter Great Strides 2026
Katie Wheelock
Mya wears a mask.
At home, she wears it during her breathing treatments—morning and night—listening to the gentle hum as she is attached to her vest, shaking and steady, powerful breaths into the mask, nebulizer treatments. It’s her training time, getting ready for school, sports, and everything else life throws her way.
On the softball field, she wears another mask.
This one snaps into place behind the plate. As a catcher, Mya sees everything. She calls the pitches, protects home, and snaps her glove shut with a loud POP! that makes runners think twice. Her breathing stays calm and strong—just like she practices every day.
Every three months, Mya checks in at the clinic, tuning up her body the same way she sharpens her skills on the field.
Different masks. Same brave girl.
Because whether she’s taking a breath or blocking the plate, Mya isn’t hiding behind her mask—she’s showing her strength. 🥎💛
