Cystic Fibrosis is a rare genetic disease found in about 30,000 people in the US. It causes significant lung disease, pancreatic insufficiency, and limits the ability to breathe and grow. Those living with CF are moms, dads, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, friends, and co-workers, all struggling each day just to breathe and try to live normal healthy lives. One of these people living with CF is my cousin, Laura, who has been my best friend since birth.
Growing up beside Laura while she struggled with this disease was not easy to watch, but ultimately is what inspired me to pursue a career in medicine to help care for the many adults (!) who are now living longer lives with this disease rather than dying from it in childhood. She is also the reason I joined the CF Breathe Team to run the New York City Marathon in 2023 and now the Berlin Marathon in September!
While there has been so much progress in treating this disease thanks to the amazing efforts of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, there are still so many who these treatments cannot help for whom we still need more research. By running the Berlin Marathon, I am running to keep adding tomorrows to the lives of all people living with Cystic Fibrosis today, and help CF to someday stand for Cure Found. Thank you for supporting this incredible cause!
