Genetic Research and the Lemon
Juile Melville
The most impelling reason I've done this crazy stair climb is the birth of my niece who, thanks to advancements, is now thriving in her 30's. Her favorite auntie at the time, I was invited to participate in her nursery school event as a "special person" and I remember a particular visit to the Children's Hospital where we watched the many firework shows around Aurora through the large hospital windows.
Anna calls herself a lemon, like the car, as she's dealt with many ancillary aspects of having a disease like this. For the most part, she's had a good life, extended by two lung transplants and many hospital "tune ups", and embraces life to the fullest. Much of this thanks to the generous donations from people like you.
But there's more!!
Genetic Research - to CF and Beyond:
When you support CF research it extends into other genetic disease solutions, as well:
-
Gene Therapy Innovations: CF research pioneered gene therapy techniques, now applied to other genetic disorders like hemophilia and muscular dystrophy.
-
CRISPR-Cas9 Applications: CF studies demonstrated the potential of CRISPR-Cas9, which is now used for conditions such as sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia.
-
Organoid Models: Lab-grown organoids developed for CF research are now modeling other genetic diseases, advancing personalized medicine.
-
Pharmaceutical Expansion: Companies like Vertex Pharmaceuticals, initially focused on CF, are leveraging gene-editing strategies for additional diseases like sickle cell and beta-thalassemia.
-
Broader Impact: CF genetic advancements have provided foundational tools and strategies for treating a wide range of genetic conditions.
