My Xtreme Hike Story
Jonathan Mauney
Fundraising for North Carolina Spring Xtreme Hike 2027
Jonathan Mauney
Last time, this journey began just days after knee surgery. I went from crutches to 30.1 miles on the Appalachian Trail, learning along the way how much one step can ask of you.
This spring, I’m choosing to do it again.
I’ll be returning for my second Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Xtreme Hike as part of Reece’s Monkeys. Our team is inspired by our friends April and Brent and their son Reece, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was young. We first met on the sidelines of our sons’ soccer games, and our families have been close ever since.
Because of incredible advances in research and treatment, people with CF are living longer, healthier lives. But those treatments still don’t work for everyone. There are more miles to cover until CF stands for Cure Found.
This time, I know what 30.1 miles feels like. I know the early mornings, the long training hikes, the tired legs, and the moments when the next step is the only one that matters. I also know why every one of those steps is worth taking.
I hope you’ll follow along and, if you’re able, support my hike. Every donation helps fund research, care, and the search for a cure for Reece and everyone living with cystic fibrosis.
One trail. Thirty miles. A second hike toward a finish line that matters far beyond the mountain.
