My CF Cycle for Life Story
Fundraising for Northern California Cycle for Life
Flavia Muttera
Our buddy, Buster, is twelve years old, and to most people he looks like a typical twelve year old. Under his brave and optimistic exterior, is the heart, mind and soul of a warrior - under attack 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by the genetic disease, cystic fibrosis.
Cystic fibrosis devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. It makes it difficult to breathe and fight life-threatening infections, often leading to extensive lung damage and respiratory failure.
Buster fights by taking about 40 doses of medications each day, and spends an hour or more connected to an oscillating vest and nebulizer, to help clear his airways.
Buster receives the benefits of the third generation of CF “miracle drugs” - the modulators that have been developed over 65 years of CFF research. But he is one of the lucky ones for whom these modulators are effective.
About 10% of people with cystic fibrosis have genetic defects that do not allow these treatments to work. CFF continues to fight and work to find treatments and a cure for all. But continued research costs lots of money.
So James and I are riding as part of the "BUSTER'S BUDDIES" team to raise funds to carry on the CF fight. BUT, this year, instead of joining the team for the local California ride, we are launching off on our own, beginning in Astoria, OR. and pedaling about 4,600 miles to Yorktown, VA.
It's a big effort for a big cause.
We hope you will support us, Buster, and the CF community in the fight to develop more effective treatments and a cure for all CF warriors.
Thanks for your support!! James and Flavia
