On December 5, I'm running the Longhorn Last Person Standing. The rules are simple - run 4.167 miles every hour on the hour. Toe the line every hour, or quit. There is no set finish, the race ends when only one remains. I chose this specific race and format for one reason: Adalynn, my niece.
She was recently diagnosed with a rare mutation of cystic fibrosis. While science has made massive strides in recent years, rare mutations often means fewer treatment options, making dedicated research and funding more critical than ever. There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis and too many people with CF die young. I’m running to help change that reality.
CF is a genetic, life-shortening disease that devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. CF makes it difficult to breathe and fight life-threatening infections, often leading to extensive lung damage and respiratory failure.
Living with CF requires incredible mental, emotional, and physical strength every day. The pain and suffering I'm choosing to face during this race will be temporary and end when I decide. Adalynn, and others like her, don't get to choose their suffering or take a break when times get dark. When that voice starts telling me to quit, I'll remember who I'm running for. I'll be running for her, and for every person and family fighting this disease.
