I am taking on the challenge (for the second time!) to hike 30 miles in one day to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

WHAT IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS?
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. CF makes it difficult to breathe and fight infections, often leading to extensive lung damage, respiratory failure, and threats to life. There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis and too many people with CF die young.

WHY AM I HIKING?
The CF community is close to my heart. My nephew-by-choice, Coleman, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was just a few weeks old. Coleman turned 8 in April. He excels in soccer, emotional intelligence, and creativity. He is a thoughtful big brother to younger sister, Claire. And he recently had one of his biggest adventures yet – a weeklong sleep-away camp! A few years ago Coleman was chosen to participate in a clinical trial, in part due to his parents’ determination and effort. Now he benefits from a modulator therapy that is designed to correct the malfunctioning protein made by the CF gene. However, not all CF Fighters have the exact same genetic mutation, so treatment advancements are not effective for everyone.

I’m on team Coleman for the Cure for the 2025 South Carolina XTreme Hike. When I hiked in 2023, my goal was to make it through the 15-mile "half hike." I surpassed that goal and hiked to the final rest station at 24.5 miles. Coleman even met us at the end with the most creative sign. (See profile pic.) My goal this year is to hike the full 30 miles. I am fueled by my commitment to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and their efforts to find a cure.

WHAT DOES THE CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION DO?
The number one mission of CFF is to find a cure. They...
  • Provide early stage funding to companies to develop breakthrough drugs for CF Fighters
  • Support research to discover and develop more CF treatments
  • Accredit more than 130 care centers
  • Advocate at the state and federal levels to ensure all CF Fighters have access to high-quality, specialized care
  • Promote equity among the CF community – CF can effect people of every racial and ethnic group

Today, the Foundation is focused on developing life saving new therapies for larger numbers of people with CF — including those with rare and nonsense mutations — and pursuing daring, new opportunities to one day develop a lifelong cure.

Your contribution (of any amount) is fully tax-deductible and will help the Foundation invest in vital CF programs to support research, care, and education. Now, more than ever, private contributions are critical to the Foundation's work.

Thank you for your consideration and support!

Sincerely,
Danielle
