Team Thomas was created in 2007, six months after Thomas was diagnosed with CF, as we knew that we needed to do something. We walked, hopped, biked, ran, and hiked. We ran many fundraisers (restaurant, jewelry parties, wrapping gifts, etc..) and we are lucky to live in a time where real progress is being made for people living with CF.
When Thomas was diagnosed in 2006, the life expectancy was 37. Today it is over 60 years old. Thomas has gone from spending several hours doing treatments everyday and taking over 35 pills to no treatments and about 20 pills per day. Of course, he has worked really hard to get this far, and treatments have been replaced by daily workouts, running, hiking, and being as active as possible, along with controlling his diet. Thomas is on the third generation of drugs that targets the cause of CF. He first took Orkambi in July 2015, which boosted his lung function and reduced some of his pancreatic issues. In November 2019 , he started Trikafta, which unfortunately did not make much changes for him (but many CFers saw huge improvements in their lung functions). And this month, February 2025, he started Alyftrek, the latest CF related drug and we hope this time he will see better results.
We invite you to take part in VA Xtreme Hike by joining our team. We have hiked for CFF since 2013, and have met incredible people, all fighting to give people living with CF better lives, by raising vital funds to advance the care and research needed to cure cystic fibrosis.
While the CF Foundation has made incredible progress, not everyone with CF can benefit from existing therapies and we still need a cure. This will require time, funding, and persistence – but with you on our team – we are ready to go the distance.
Our team is committed to providing every person with CF the opportunity to live a long, healthy life. Will you join us?
