My Xtreme Hike Story

Fundraising for 15th Annual Xtreme Hike Massachusetts 2026
Monica Luchini
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic, life-shortening disease that devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. It makes it difficult to breathe, fight infections, and live without constant medical care. While there have been remarkable advances in treatment, there is still no cure, and too many lives are lost to this disease far too soon.
My nephew, Dan Bessette, lived with cystic fibrosis for 41 courageous years. He climbed a mountain most of us will never have to face, enduring two lung transplants and years of intense treatment with strength, grace, and determination. Dan is now at peace, and I am taking on this climb in his honor. The love, resilience, and unwavering support of the entire Bessette family have been a lasting inspiration to me.
I am hiking to help change the future for those living with CF. Fundraising is critical to advancing research, improving treatments, and ultimately finding a cure. Great strides have been made, and even greater breakthroughs are within reach—but only with continued support. Please consider joining us on this 26-mile hike or making a donation in honor of Dan and all those affected by cystic fibrosis.
