My CF Cycle for Life Story

The connections to CF have touched me in so many ways over the past 29 years.  My clients, Matt and Amy Varrell, asked me to participate in a bike ride to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis for their niece, Haylee, who was born with CF. In October of 1997, I attended my first Cycle for Haylee Ride, now the Cycle for Life, as a Team Leader and have been involved every year of the ride since.

The Cycle for Haylee ride grew each and every year.  I continued to expand our team bringing in other participants from my office, clients, and friends.  The Cycle for Haylee ride became one of the most successful rides in the country to the point that it became a national ride under the “Cycle For Life” initiative.

One of the reasons, I have stayed involved with Cystic Fibrosis is the amount of progress that is made with the Foundation.  Twenty plus years ago the life expectancy of people with CF was only 25 years of age and consequently a significant number of people with the disease have passed away during my commitment to the cause.  Thankfully, people born today with CF are living into their 30’s and 40’s.

In 2010, I started my involvement on a committee level and have been involved since.  The committee coordinates the event, including fundraising, logistics, safety, team building, promotion, and other efforts.  I continue to meet people that have been impacted and involved with Cystic Fibrosis, like Patty Osten, a Cystic Fibrosis pulmonary therapist who has made such an impact.  In 2014, I was honored to be given the Volunteer of the Year award.

A few years later, Haylee interned for my team at Centinel Financial Group in her Junior and Senior years of college. We saw firsthand the struggles that she has with Cystic Fibrosis.

Another connection to CF was my Babson Theta Chi fraternity brother, Mike Furey.  My Centinel Financial Team won beer naming rights with a local brewery supportive of Cystic Fibrosis.  A few days later I learned of the passing of Mike at age 43 from CF.  Whether it was coincidence or serendipity, we named the beer, “Fureyous Resolve”, in honor of Mike.  We then went on a fundraising campaign including my fraternity that brought in additional donations and support.

I will not stop raising money and awareness for CF until it stands for Cure Found!
