Hello dear family and friends,
Thank you for visiting our team page. We are grateful to you for helping Elena fight CF through your donation, by hiking with us, and/or with your prayers.
Last year's hike was Elena's first full Xtreme hike. Joining her for 18 soggy miles were her sister, Viola, Viola's friend Charlotte, and Elena's friend Blaise. It was a great joy to see Elena's lungs so strong!
Thanks to your donations, the Foundation has developed life-saving drugs and therapies that have not only kept Elena alive, but allow her to climb mountains. In fact, Elena would not have lived to age 3 without these medications. Additionally, recent developments in gene therapies (CFTR modulators) have not only dramatically increased life expectancy but have also improved quality of life. These therapies mean many people are now able to conceive, leave the transplant list, have fewer hospital stays, stop daily physical therapy and maintenance medications, and participate in physically demanding activities. Elena has personally benefited from these gene modulators and is even able to consider a career in nursing—something that would have been too risky without modulators.
Elena will hike again this year! And she has a great team joining: Viola, Ben, Matt Jochum (my brother), Marianne Panke, Blaise Ryan, Mia Duffy, and me. We hope you will join us, too! This year's hike will be held on September 26th at Wintergreen Resort. The full route is 20 miles, with an option to complete fewer legs.
