My niece Murphy was born with the progressive and uncured genetic disease, cystic fibrosis.
I'm running a marathon to change that, because there is immense and real hope to change that within Murphy's lifetime.
CF is a genetic, life-shortening disease that devastates the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs.
CF makes it difficult to breathe and fight life-threatening infections,
often leading to extensive lung damage and respiratory failure.
Think of it.. Murphy today at 3 years old, already takes around 35 pills each day, and that number is likely to keep growing.
"In 2023, the Foundation advanced these efforts by funding approximately $243 million in laboratory research, preclinical drug development,
and clinical and real-world research — the largest amount to date" (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2023). Thanks to the breakthroughs from CF research, just in the past decade the median lifespan has gone up by 18 YEARS.
Murphy gets to dream even bigger about her future.
