There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis and too many people with CF die young. I’m hiking to help change that reality.
I am kicking off fundraising efforts (as well as a training regimen) to participate in the SC Xtreme Hike - a 30-mile, one day journey in upstate South Carolina. This event is hosted by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a rockstar non-profit very dear to my heart.
From the bleak prognosis of Cystic Fibrosis at age two, to celebrating his 40th birthday a few years ago, every year is a gift for my husband, John. His successful double lung transplant in 2019 opened up a world of possibilities that we could only dream of. I cannot put into words the joy we have felt as a family, watching John explore the great outdoors with our two boys, embarking on adventures that once seemed out of reach. Rock climbing, backcountry hiking, 24-hour races – each new experience is a testament to the indomitable spirit that resides within him. And as we prepare for our third year participating in the Xtreme Hike, we are reminded of this journey of sacrifice and determination.
John's story is more than just one of survival; it's a story of resilience and determination that has allowed him to conquer mountains, both literally and figuratively. He has climbed Mount Rainier, Grand Teton, Longs Peak and so many more- once unattainable, defying the odds and proving that with the right support and resources, individuals living with CF can achieve remarkable feats.
Our story is just one of many, and it highlights the incredible potential for individuals living with CF to lead fulfilling lives, break boundaries, and inspire us all.
