Dear Family and Friends,
It’s that time of year again! Time to begin fundraising for our Tyler Great Strides Walk. I want to thank you all for your continued love and support as we work together to find a cure for cystic fibrosis.
I’m Maci, and I am proud to share that I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science in May (Boomer Sooner!) and am now an alumni of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. I am currently continuing my education in nursing school at UT Tyler, preparing for a lifelong career in healthcare. Nursing school has already challenged and inspired me, strengthening my desire to care for others.
Living with cystic fibrosis has shaped who I am. While college taught me independence, CF taught me resilience and perseverance. As I begin nursing school, I am now living at home, which has allowed me to focus on my health, my studies, and balancing the daily responsibilities that come with CF. Having the support of my family close by is a blessing during this season of my life.
Over the past several years, we have seen meaningful progress in CF research. While there is still no cure, Trikafta, approved by the FDA in late 2019, has been life-changing for many patients with one copy of the Delta F508 gene—including me. I truly believe it has improved my health. That said, CF remains a daily battle. I still complete breathing treatments twice a day, take up to 40 pills daily, and require antibiotics when I get sick.
Now that I am in nursing school, I see CF through a new lens—not just as a patient, but as a future nurse. I am reminded daily how important continued research, advocacy, and compassionate care truly are. CF is part of my life, but it does not define me. My fight will not be finished until there is a cure for ALL people living with cystic fibrosis.
