Paddles Up for Lynn
Danielle Stackrow
Why Am I Hiking?
I’m hiking for my mom and brother, both of whom live with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the daily battles, challenges, and heartbreaks this disease brings. I’ve spent countless nights helping my family—pounding on their backs to loosen the mucus in their lungs, memorizing medication schedules, and sitting by hospital beds, hoping for a cure.
Despite these struggles, our family has been incredibly fortunate. Ten years ago, my mom received a life-saving double lung transplant at St. Joe's, and this July, we’ll celebrate her tenth “lungiversary.” My brother has also experienced a transformation in his health thanks to Kalydeco, a groundbreaking medication for his CF variation that has brought his lung function to near 100%. While these advancements have given our family moments of hope, too many others aren’t as fortunate. CF has shaped our lives, and I’m determined to help change its course for everyone battling this disease.
What Is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic, life-shortening disease that primarily affects the lungs, pancreas, and other vital organs. It makes breathing a constant struggle and battling life-threatening infections an everyday reality. Over time, CF leads to extensive lung damage and, for many, respiratory failure.
Every person with CF faces a unique journey. While significant progress has been made in treatment—offering longer, healthier lives for some—there is still no cure. Many people with CF continue to face uncertain futures, and the fight against this disease remains urgent.
What Is the Hike?
I’m participating in the Grand Canyon Xtreme Hike, a grueling yet inspiring journey to raise funds and awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. From May 16-18, our group will hike the breathtaking Rim-to-Rim Trail at the Grand Canyon, covering up to 24 miles in a single day. This hike is not only physically demanding, but it’s also deeply meaningful, symbolizing the resilience and strength of those living with CF.
We’ll descend into the canyon at sunrise, cross the Colorado River, and climb back up the opposite rim, surrounded by awe-inspiring views. Along the way, we’ll share stories, honor loved ones, and push ourselves to the limits—all for a cause that is close to our hearts.
Will You Help Us End Cystic Fibrosis?
There’s currently no cure for CF, but together, we can change that. I’m hiking to raise critical funds for research and treatments that will one day make CF a thing of the past. Every step I take is a step toward hope—a hope for longer, healthier lives for my mom, my brother, and all those affected by this disease.
Your donation to my fundraising goal will fuel this mission. Together, we can bring life-changing breakthroughs within reach. Thank you for supporting this cause that means so much to me and my family. 💜
